A Day in the Life of a Construction Project Manager

Hi ho, hi ho, it’s off to work we go. Today we ride along with a project manager on the way to work, at the construction site and after the day ends to see how an advanced mobile reporting app designed specifically for the construction industry can make life easier and lunch more leisurely by streamlining project management

5 am

Rise and shine buddy boy.

Make coffee. Shower and shave. Pet dog. Check a mobile app for the weather.

While checking the weather, make sure your construction time clock is still on your smartphone. Yep, still there. You’re ready to track time, baby.

6 am

Open the laptop and use the cloud-based GPS location app to see an overview of the job site, pull up photos to enlarge and inspect. Compare construction time to the original schedule and other job costing stuff.

Read notes from crew leads, find ways to best unstop their bottleneck issues. Worry about time and attendance issues because you can’t help yourself.

6:30 am

Fire up the truck, listen to sports radio.

Unlock the job site. Clock in with time clock app to record production hours. Use real-time GPS equipment tracking to locate all heavy rigs on the project. Note operators, production hours to date, other issues related to employee time and calculate fuel usage. Check maintenance schedules.

7 am

Crew starts to arrive. Once everyone’s ready with safety gear on, the supervisor can clock the crew in all at once using a handy-dandy mobile time clock for construction.

7:20 am

Calculate additional labor costs for incoming change orders.

Delegate supervisor to follow up, resolve problems and play catch up. Assure yourself you don’t have to remind employees clock in and out when they’re moving around because your time tracking apps have location-based reminders.

7:30 am

Walk site.

Go offline when your smartphone loses service on a job site. Don’t care about going offline since your construction app has an offline mode.

8 am

Crew takes detailed photos of the bedded pipe installation. Schedule inspection dates. Review installation for code compliance and quality issues. Give important feedback to crew lead

Joint restraints & valves. Tornado warnings for later in the week. Deal with customer service issues while you’re preoccupied with the twister on the horizon.

Noon

Clock out for lunch. Demonstrate how simple clock-in, clock-out can track employee hours so workers can easily go on break or switch job locations and cost codes from their phones.

1:00 pm

Clock back in from lunch. Review morning’s progress, order missing materials, photograph shipping receipt and upload it to accounting.

Use app to schedule staff vacations.

1:30 pm

Discuss job progress with boss. Use the app to see the location of two available bulldozers needed for the afternoon.

2:00 pm

Review man-hours and labor costs for the next job. Use mobile reporting app to identify machines with excessive idle time. Investigate the inefficiency of two machines.

3:00 pm

Respond to a minor injury. Take pictures and document the incident. Send worker home for the day. File report. Adjust job scheduling to reflect unpredicted shutdown.

4:00 pm

Go on break, call home.

Find yourself chattin’ with the spouse about your upgraded construction software. Spouse interrupts you to tell you to get milk on the way home.

4:30 pm

End break. Use the time card app to collect smart jobsite data.

5:00 pm

Review overtime and vacation. Use mobile time tracking to make sure safety and time sign-offs are completed.

6:00 pm

Secure the job site.

6:15 pm

Clock out, head home. Forget milk.

Location-based notice automatically goes out to each worker reminding them to clock out.

7:00 pm

Complete invoicing, check time card hours, labor costs, make sure you’re not doing time tracking wrong. Compare against labor budget.

Go back out to get the milk you forgot.

Review afternoon work-in-progress photos and resolve problems. Identify action steps for tomorrow.

8:15 pm

Feet up, beer open, news on, man out.
